Student Teachers. Whatyouwantwhatyouneed?
Now that you’re almost halfway through student teaching you’ll probably begin talking about building a portfolio, resume, cover letters and interviewing.  Would you be interested in me sharing what I’ve got with you?  I was thinking of posting one of my cover letters for applications and since hiring for next year usually starts in March I was thinking this was prime time.  How...

Tumblbuddies,
We’re wrapping up our research project in Jr High & I wanted to know if any of you have any experience with career planning.  I remember when I was in Jr. High we met up with the counselors in the computer lab and researched careers that we would be interested in. I think I’d like to do this with my students and get them all geared up for the real world.  If you’re...

Education Ideas from a Realist.
Sometimes, as bad as it sounds, I think the ideas in education reform are so romanticized that they’ll never come true and nothing will ever change.  Sure, it would be great if our kids could be versed with knowledge of the arts and go to school to get inspired, but in reality they have a hard enough time graduating from high school.  Not so long ago, I lived in a big suburban town with a...

Strange Questions Jr. High Asks
I must have been asked where I shop and if I shop at Urban Outfitters about 15 times on Friday.  I swear my Junior High kids are obsessed with asking me where I buy my clothes from.  I’ve had two boys ask me if I work at Hollister part-time (god only knows why they said Hollister), two girls compliment me and then ask me if I shop at Forever 21, and about 10 of them ask if I shopped at...

Calm Down Kit for Students Who Need a Break
I stumbled across this Calm Down Kit and realized that I could have used something like this at camp last year.  Included in this handy kit are several items that can help a child return to a peaceful state.  Some of the items include: bubbles (for deep breathing), fidgets, play dough, counting manipulatives, etc.  This is a great idea!

Things My Students Say
Me: Mr. L left us a classic to watch. Get ready for some Magic School Bus.
8th Grade Student: Oh, we're watching that show with the teacher that's a wizard?!
Me: A burst of laughter & She is not a wizard, but I can see how you thought that.

It’s 8:48 and I’ve already finished all the planning for next week. This has never happened before. It’s also sports day and I’m wearing jeans and the DePaul shirt I slept in. (don’t judge me) Thought: “Now that it’s February is it Februany?” as is “Can I get a foot long turkey breast on Italian herbs and cheddar not toasted with light oil...

How High School Anti-Bullying Programs Can Make... →
This is a very interesting read.  Not only does the article address the fact that calling attention to bullying doesn’t just solve it, but also discusses the fact that teenagers (and adults) usually dismiss bullying for a typical “growing” experience.  We’ve all been through it and we’ve all survived, but that’s not to say without scars.  For the past two...
