Why is involving young people in reinventing...
My simple answer: because we will never again be in those shoes. We remember things as they were, not as they are. Sure, we are here to try, but we can only try with what we know. If we involve the young’s minds and LISTEN to what they’re saying we will be able to change education. This is why it is forever important to keep our field fresh. We will always be an occupation that benefits from...

theimprobablefiction asked: EDD: Post a picture (or describe) your favorite school outfit... like one of those outfits when you're wearing it, you have an extra pep in your step and you can't help but have a good day. :) Also, I think I might be channeling my inner Cher from Clueless right now. My humblest apologies. ;)

Details if possible.
Ex: Did you get a job right out of college in your field or specialty?
Ex: Were your tenured?

Slow, but I can't decide if it's painful or not.
It’s slowly, not all at once, but slowly sinking in that this is the end of my first year with my own classroom. All I keep thinking to myself is:
“Is this everything you thought it would be?”
“Do you have any idea how lucky you are?”
”Would you have have imagined this is how it would all turn out?”
“Do you have any idea that these kids are...

Hey Beanni,
It’s almost 3 am Chicago time. Now would be the time to ask me why I’m awake. By now, you can probably guess why. You didn’t come party with us tonight, but you were there in spirit. I hope bizzle had a fun night, she was MIA hangin with her friends. Anyways, it was a fun night. Lots of celebration and anticipating of summer (here at least). Bummer that you are entering fall. I probably will...

“And this summer I will make my classroom the best classroom where everything is organized and planned in advance!”
edukaition asked: I'm so glad you're back! I missed your sass and fabulous sense of style.
allthewallswecrashedthrough asked: Hi there! I'm a freshman in high school, and I'm pretty sure i want to be a teacher when i get older. It's the only thing i can realistically see myself doing & truly enjoying, at least at this point. I was just wondering what exactly you had to "study"/major in to be able to teach elementary school children. If you can find the time to reply, i would really appreciate...

Well hello there,
Back for a day to let Bizzle know that I cut full bangs (myself I might add) and got called Carly Rae Jepson in the hallway on more than one occasion. I still don’t know about this Carly comparison, but what a coincidence. :)
The Last Post
and in the least dramatic of ways, I bid you farewell, Tumblr. Maybe I’ll be back someday. Like if you have a new follower soon with a weird name and no picture, it’s probably me. To all my TumblrBabies, Love you. Best of luck for the rest of the school year.
Xox.

For New Teachers: A Place to Share Your Tips on...
Many of us struggle with pull out. I personally have six kids pulled out in the beginning of my day. Four that return after an hour or thirty minutes depending on the day and two that return after a whopping hour and forty five minutes.
So, seasoned tumblr teachers would you please share with us newbies? How do you manage your time to ensure that your students who are pulled out do not miss...

What are some of your go-to vocab activities?
adiemtocarpe:
Here are some of the ones we do in my class.
word webs
cartoon/comics using the words
30 second picture draw
charades
review questions with whiteboards
vocab math ( ______ + ________ = word)
crossword puzzles
vocab password (like the gameshow- students give one word clues)
I feel I have exhausted our normal activities and looking for new ones. What activities do you use...
Oh no... What have I done.
I’ve entered the realm of becoming facebook friends with co-workers. I felt obligated to, the requests were from teacher friends at work, but they’re the first. I only fear that parents and other teachers alike can find me now. :( Not that I have anything incriminating, but still. That’s my space to be me.

Serious question, do you actually plan during your...
Personally, I run around like a chicken with its head cut off, eat a super quick snack, reorganize and regroup, get ready for my next lesson, etc.
I don’t think I’ve ever planned and I think I can count the number of times I’ve graded during a plan on one hand. So, what do you all do during your planning period?

My product of choice is by Osis and it’s called Body Me. Its feather weight makes my hair feel like there’s nothing in it. I have very thick, wavy hair and it keeps it managable when I blow dry. Most products leave my hair unbrushable and gross feeling. The only downside to this product is its price, but that’s why I ordered from England. Bumble and bumble is on my list, I...
WTF Friday.
So a boy just texted me to hangout or something this weekend and when I politely just let him know that I was dating someone (but never denied his invitation because I’m a big girl and I can have guy friends and keep it in my pants to put it bluntly) he responded with “Nevermind then! LOL”

Here's a random Friday Fact.
I ordered my hair product from the UK because it was half the price than it normally is at my salon. I received the package today that was hand packed with a little note in it stating that the lovely Jason hand picked and packed my product. There was a second note hiding under the packing peanuts and something green in the box too. The note read: “To add a little fun, here’s a bouncy...

Among the frustrations you accumulate from your colleagues, what’s pettiest pet peevish frustration of them all? (Frustration with professional colleagues, not with students or admin.)
Of course, you can answer here.

EDD: What were you like as a student?

Do you have any students now that remind you of yourself?
I was definitely the weird-pain-in-the-butt-disorganizer-ADD-mess.
I sometimes feel the need to facebook my third grade teacher and apologize. I’d say something like, “Hey, it’s me! Surprise! I’m a fourth grade teacher now (Yeah, I know right?!) Well, I just wanted to let you know that I turned out...

Would you let them include violence in their writing?
Would you allow them to speak about their favorite video games in class?
Would you allow them to add descriptive “gory” details into fiction writing?
Would you guide them gently to pursue non-fiction?
How would you distinguish the difference between what belongs in the classroom and what...

What's with grading in red?
It’s considered “demeaning to the the child”. I don’t necessarily agree, but I do follow the guidelines at school. Plus, I get to use all my colorful Flair pens which are the best pens on the planet.

Gaming to Re-Engage Boys in Learning
Click through link if it’s not working.
In spite of this being almost three year old, it really struck a cord with me and got me thinking.
In this video, Ali Carr-Chellman discusses an interesting point on losing boys because of our Zero Tolerance Policy.
I had to laugh out loud when she states that if a boy wants to write about guns, violence, video games, or destruction a teacher...

Little Moments Like These:
I bought about $30 worth of new (read: used) books for my classroom on Tuesday and I always place the newbies in a bin on the front table after I introduce them to my class. Today, I mentioned to my class that I bought a Rocks & Minerals book to go with our science unit. The book was illustrated similarly to a graphic novel and was filled with interesting facts about what seemed like every...

Confession & Tips?
I am possibly the worst grader on the planet.
I hate it. I despise it. I avoid it.
I know where all my kids are and I cannot sit still long enough to even grade one stack of tests. I would much rather spend my time making and creating resources and lessons for my kids than playing “Zombie with a red pen.” (No, before you say it, I don’t grade in red. Don’t worry.) Any...
